KAYAKING

Kayaks have become increasingly popular for shore launches, sometimes filling in for the standard inflatable launch especially on short or exploratory trips. Resembling river or 'white water' designs, they are smaller than normal sea kayaks and generally made of plastic (occasionally inflatable). They are small enough to stow behind the lifelines on one of the side rails, and deploy easily one-handed. They offer recreation and exercise on windless days, and have the added bonus of not requiring fuel while still offering adequate speed and seaworthiness.

The fuel issue is not only one of cost or environmental issues, but one of stowage as outboards can burn up a considerable store of fuel which cannot be replenished if one wants to enjoy wilderness seclusion for extended lenghts of time.
