RECOMMENDED MOVIES

Wind (1992)

Columbia TriStar

Matthew Modine, Jennifer Grey, Cliff Robertson, Stellan Skarsgård, Peter Montgomery.

Based loosely on the story of Dennis Conner and the 1983 America's Cup match where the Americans lost the cup to the Australians, ending the longest winning streak in sporting history. Possibly the only movie available showing modern yacht techniques and equipment in a big-budget production.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Twentieth Century-Fox

Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D'Arcy, Edward Woodall.

The film takes place during the Napoleonic Wars and follows the engagements of a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, as the two stalk each other off of the Atlantic coast of South America and eventually meet in the Pacific at the Galapagos Islands. Russell Crowe plays Captain Jack Aubrey. Historic sailing techniques and terminology abound in this movie, with astounding accuracy.

White Squall (1996)

Jeff Bridges, Caroline Goodall, John Savage, Scott Wolf, Jeremy Sisto.

The true story of the sail training ship "Albatross" which, in 1960, took aboard eight teenage boys for an eight months cruise which was cut short by a freak storm. Jeff Bridges plays the school's owner Christopher "Skipper" Sheldon. Interesting study of personalities interacting on a long cruise.

The Bounty (1984)

Orion Pictures

Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Edward Fox, Daniel Day-Lewis.

Considered the most accurate depiction of the true story of Lieutenant Bligh, whose command techniques lead to a mutiny on his ship The Bounty in 1788 Tahiti. This version shows the epic voyage of Lieutenant Bligh as he lead his loyalists safely to East Timor in a small lifeboat. A somewhat dark depiction of Tahiti is the only down side of this version of the classic story.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, Richard Harris.

Marlon Brando played Fletcher Christian with his real-life Tahitian bride in this lighter version of the story of Captain Bligh and The Bounty. Often criticized for over the top performance of Brando, this version does a positive and charming depiction of Tahitian culture and life.
