SNORKELING AND SWIMMING

Swimming to your perfect beach and, snorkeling afterwards, is a perfect way to spend the sunny days of your cruise in between passages. In local British Columbia waters in summer, as well as Hawaii and Mexico, you can stay in the water for varying amounts of time without a wetsuit, usually depending on how much preheating you do in the sun first. To extend that time, a 3mm 'shorty' wetsuit, 3mm full wetsuit, or 5mm jacket-only (wetsuit) is ideal. Any further insulation will require  a weight belt, and is usually reserved for S.C.U.B.A. ascents.

Spear fishing, once synonymous with snorkeling, is not as popular as it once was due to declining stocks, however in certain open-ocean beach areas, especially reef openings to open ocean, there is still the occasional prize (often offset by the prospect of larger predators in close proximity). A pole spear or Hawaiian Sling is preferred over the spear gun as it is more sporting and less dangerous to other swimmers.
